Rue Denim – Summer 2010 Advertising Images

Exciting new label Rue Denim has rolled out the images we recently shot in studio of their summer range. The aim was to produce brand images for in-store and web signage.

The brief was all about showing the form fitting range of jeans on a clean white background.

Tech info after the images

Tech info for all you tech junkies:

  • Shot on a white seamless background with reflective floor
  • 2 lights on the background, key light through a beauty dish or 60 inch softbox on the model, large reflector for fill
  • Background lights are flagged to prevent spill
  • 2 black barndoors to either side of model to increase contrast

Getting Sick with Steve….for (commercial) laughs

Just got word that I can now share some outtakes from a shoot we recently delivered for agency Simjen.

The brief called for an image depicting the concept “Revive your Business”.

We got the commission on a real tight timetable, and I literally had about 4 hours to get the team together, get directions to the talent to the studio from the airport & shoot it, and then deliver the proof images that night.

Got to work with former Ralph Lauren model Steve Nation, who you may also recognize from that famous Listerine ad with the cheeks exploding and the barnacles blowing off the bottom of the yacht.

Special effects make up was done by Haley Whittle and on real short notice I was able to get some props from a contact in the medical industry. We shot about 200 frames in studio & that was a wrap!

Below are some of my favorite outtakes, Steve’s acting ability had me struggling not to burst out laughing the whole time.

The Cool Calm Collective – New Members, New Look, Same Cool

You might remember my shoot in 2009 with The Cool Calm Collective.

This year the band (Minus 2 members but plus one) got back in contact with me to do their 2010 advertising images on the back of playing at Splendour.

We caught up at Neverland before soundcheck and shot off some frames.

Shirt off My Back Competition

My uber cool friends at Mycityonashirt.com have started a simple little business where people can get the name of their hometown, birthplace, suburb or maybe just the name of somewhere special  to them printed on a shirt. Best yet, they’re made from environmentally friendly materials and are really soft and comfortable.

I got myself one to wear around with the suburb I live in Currumbin printed on it, and as a special bonus got an extra one for one lucky person.

Here’s all you have to do to win it:

  • First, make sure you “Like” both the Kenny Smith Photographer and Mycityonashirt.com pages
  • On your Facebook status, write “I wish @Kenny Smith – Photographer would give me his shirt from @Mycityonashirt.com (copy and paste won’t cut it, it HAS to be typed using the @ symbol)
  • Make sure both the Kenny Smith-Photographer and Mycityonashirt.com are hyperlinked in your status using the @ key
  • Each status update counts as an entry so update as often as you want

That’s it! I’ve emailed a random number to Mycityonashirt and the corresponding number of person to do so will win it. I will even post the sucker out to you, Worldwide.

Winner will also get a shoutout on Facebook & Twitter!

So get on Facebook, update your status and you’ll be co-representing my favorite suburb Currumbin along with me

Competition closes midnight August 31 2010

(Prize is 1 x White XL Tee with Currumbin on it)

MOVE FOR LIFE: Campaign Images

Got word this week that some images I shot for the 2010 print campaign for fitness company Move for Life had been released.

Most of the shots were done in late 2009 and the final campaign was put together by Rachel Simper, the cool cat behind agency Black Design.

The shots feature 2000 world ironman champion Phil Clayton. who in addition to the group and corporate training sessions he runs, is the coach for career athletes Hayley Bateup and Ky Hurst.

I recall what we were talking about when we were shooting the portrait shot. Phil was going after the shoot to take his kids to see Toy Story 3, and we’re both big fans of the first 2 movies. We were quoting our favourite lines from the previous episodes. Not sure if that had any effect on the final shot or not, but I think we all have a bit of Buzz Lightyear in us.

Go over to Move’s Facebook page to see more as they roll the images out, for now here is an outtake of one of the portraits and one of the campaign tears.

To infinity and beyond………….

MAKE THINGS, IT’S THE ONLY WAY

Here we are, just past the year’s halfway mark

I’m making some last minute preperations for my next shoot, scheduling, hair & make up, logistics. It got me thinking about how things have grown since I decided to give this whole photography thing a nudge for real and try to make a living from creating pictures.

All along the way, things have grown by one thing, it’s in the making. You start by grabbing a friend or relative, shoot them, then share. Next someone else has seen it, likes what you do, and you’re shooting more, and sharing more. Then more and more and on it goes. Things get bigger, more fun, more complicated, more of a gamble, more of an expense, but the reward gets better too. Next thing you know, you’re addicted, to the making.

Some friends & I made some stuff a few days ago. A bunch of like minded people all addicted to the making.

Big props to: Assistants: josh mcguire, gina martin | Make Up: jodie gutierrez | Cast: andrea tenielle, jessica michaels, ali wilmshurst, twins ashleigh & sarah lyons, tiffany sinclair, jade funk | Location steve bunce | Corporate Support respect music.com.au

New Studio – First pics and Test

Here’s a couple pics shot today of the new studio space, what is missing is a desk for post processing and office area, a small rug to go under the couches, and a bulb for the groovy reading lamp. What’s not pictured is the 6 person hair and makeup room, reception area and restroom.

3 walls are painted gray, to stop light bouncing around the room. I left the floor bare which has a cool industrial texture to it with paint spilled all over by the original builders, kinda adds character.

And here’s your truly in a quick test of the setup.

Commercial Headshots

Was recently asked to come up with some corporate headshot samples of my work. Luckily I was able to put together some stuff using shots from other projects.  Although not initially shot for the purpose that I needed them for now, after a bit of cropping and different presentation, they came out pretty cool. And yes, I got the gig.
